Engagement Snapshot
Check out what we learned during stage one of engagement to shape the upgrades for Harry Patterson Park.
A range of potential upgrades were considered for Harry Patterson Park, with the City having sought input from the local community to help shape the future of this much-loved neighbourhood space.
The park has mostly been used for recreation and informal gatherings, and features a playground and basketball hoop. The playground is due for renewal, and we also explored broader park improvements across two stages of engagement.
The second round of community voting closed 4pm Monday, 11 May 2026, with option 3 the preferred play equipment.
Our interactive image has more details; or you can explore the presented designs here.
While we loved the idea of a flying fox, it wasn't included as one of the final options, as a detailed site assessment identified constraints and costs that meant it was not feasible for this project.
Instead, we used your feedback on what you’d like to see changed at the park to develop a plan that includes:
- New play features, including a small play unit with slide, toddler play elements, and a 360° basket swing selected in Stage 1
- Basketball court upgrades with a slightly larger court, new tower and backboard
- Improved landscaping with additional tree planting and a picnic table
- New paths and a small bike/scooter loop
- Enhanced streetscape, including upgrades to the South Street walkway and artwork wraps for the power box and irrigation cabinet along Stanbury Place.

Stage One
During stage one we invited the community help us understand how you had been using the park and your ideas for improvements.
Sixty two people participated in our survey, sharing their preferences and ideas for the park’s future. This informed the design options we presented in this second round of engagement.

Harry Patterson Park is a valued local space, and the City wants to ensure any future upgrades reflect how the community uses the park now and how they would like to use it in the future.
Community feedback has helped the City understand priorities for the park, explore options for potential improvements (including the future of the existing basketball facility), and ensure upgrades are inclusive, practical, and responsive to local needs.
With two stages of engagement, the City was able to test ideas, identify what matters most to residents, and use this input to inform design options and a second-stage community vote before final decisions were made.
The hierarchy of parks within the City reflect state documentation/strategies. These classifications are based on the number of anticipated visitors and the distance they are drawn from:
- District parks - people will attend from over two kilometres
- Neighbourhood parks - residents from 800 metres
- Local parks - residents from approximately 400 metres
- Pocket parks - incidental green spaces around the City.
The amount of facilities/infrastructure provided at each space reflects the size and use of the reserve, travel distance and anticipated duration of time spent on-site.
The distribution of district, neighbourhood and local parks allows us to have a balanced level of the quality of space across the City.
Harry Patterson Park is classified as a local park.
We want our engagement process to be accessible by all. In addition to the online survey, you could share your feedback by contacting us:
