Help shape a tool to assess biodiversity in gardens.
Join NatureLink Perth from Murdoch University at the EcoHub to help them test a simple garden survey they are developing. The survey is being designed to allow the community to assess biodiversity (the variety of living things) in their home gardens.
Biodiversity is vital for so many reasons - it allows ecosystems to function, it provides clean air and water, pollination of plants, healthy soil, climate regulation and resilience to extreme events, and it contributes to community well-being including mental and physical health.
We are looking for a small group of people to help test the survey and make sure it is clear, practical, and easy for anyone to use. No prior knowledge or expertise is required (specific species identification is not involved) - in fact we are especially interested in hearing from people who are new to this.
What you'll do:
Try out the draft survey in the various gardens at the EcoHub during this event
Take a survey home to test
Reply by email to share feedback on what worked or didn't, anything that you didn't understand etc
Why this matters:
This survey is being designed so that biodiversity in residential areas can be assessed and tracked over time. Urban areas have lost a lot of biodiversity and many initiatives are trying to support its return. In parks and reserves it is easier to monitor, but residential areas also play a key role.
