Leeming Primary School Engagement
Teacher facilitated in classroom design workshop to help inform design options
The playground at Montague Hillary Park is undergoing renewal, with the preferred design selected following community engagement.
To help shape the new playground, the City began the conversation with local experts - Leeming Primary School students - who shared their creative ideas and wishlists through an in-class co-design activity. Their input helped inform four playground design options presented to the community for voting.
The upgrade includes a new nature playspace, additional park seating, and planting to enhance biodiversity.
This project has been made possible with funding from the WA Government.
Explore the designs
Four imaginative playground designs were presented during engagement, each offering a unique mix of play elements, themes and features. From climbing opportunities to creative play spaces, the designs aimed to inspire fun, connection and outdoor activity for children. Community members were able to review the options by scrolling through the designs using the arrow located at the bottom left of the page.

Working with our local experts
Leeming Primary School sits just across the road from Montague Hillary Park, and students regularly use the space to play and catch up with friends.
Before asking the wider community for feedback, the City invited Leeming Primary students to share their ideas through an in-class co-design activity. Forty-two students took part, creating imaginative playground designs that featured "really good" slides, swings, climbing structures, and ziplines (samples pictured)!
Feedback from this engagement helped shape the design brief for the playground options for community voting.
The students were invited to vote for their preferred playground design option. Their votes have been added to the wider community results to help determine the final preferred design.

These elements were determined by the level of funding and type of park (as classified within the park hierarchy).
Montague Hillary Park is classified as a local park, designed primarily for nearby residents and visitors from within about 400 metres. Because of its size and residential setting, sporting infrastructure is not suitable or manageable at this location.
The hierarchy of parks within the City reflect state documentation/strategies. These classifications are based on the number of anticipated visitors and the distance they are drawn from:
- District parks - people will attend from over two kilometres
- Neighbourhood parks - residents from 800 metres
- Local parks - residents from approximately 400 metres
- Pocket parks - incidental green spaces around the City.
The distribution of district, neighbourhood and local parks allows us to have a balanced level of the quality of space across the City.
To ensure the new playground meets local needs, we wanted your help to choose the best design. Engaging with the community is key to building a sense of pride and ownership.
Your input helps us create a playground that everyone can enjoy and feel connected to.

This project has been made possible with funding from the WA Government. The Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) is administering Local Government 2025 State Election Commitments on behalf of the WA Government.
Leeming Primary School is located directly across the road from Montague Hillary Park, and its students are some of the park’s most frequent users, often visiting before and after school. To make sure the design options reflected the needs of those key users, the City carried out a preliminary round of engagement with the school before opening voting to the wider community.
Leeming Primary School votes were included in the final tally. The voting process was tailored to suit younger students, but their selections were counted in the same way as all other community votes.
