THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964)

Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop ownerโ€™s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand, THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.

Winner of the Palm d'Or at the 1965 Canes Film Festival.

CASSANDRA TYTLER is a video artist and researcher whose practice spans experimental moving image, performance, and site-based installations. Her work explores the complex power hierarchies that shape relationships between human and more-than-human ecologies, examining how these dynamics contribute to exclusion, oppression, and the climate crisis. Through a feminist, anti-colonialist, and critical lens, Tytlerโ€™s practice creates speculative, immersive experiences that invite audiences to interrogate structures of power and disrupt normative ways of being.
