About Yagan Mia Wireless Hill Museum
Located in natural bushland in Ardross, Yagan Mia Wireless Hill Museum shares the rich stories of Melville and its surrounds through a dynamic program of curated exhibitions and events. Explore the area’s fascinating history of communications, unique botanical significance, stories from the Melville community, and the site's deep cultural significance to the Noongar Beeliar people.
The museum sits on a site know as
Yagan Mia, a traditional place of gathering, healing, and connection. Named for the Noongar leader and resistance fighter Yagan, during the
Place Names Melville project, the name was decoded to have a dual meaning -
home of the long-necked turtle (yaakin).
Exhibitions are housed in the former engine room of the original wireless station, established in 1912. Visitors can explore interpretive trails that delve into Wireless Hill’s history as a telegraph station, along with wildflower walks and Noongar cultural trails. A wonderful family friendly place to explore and enjoy the views across the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River).
