Take a deep dive into DNA – the history, the myths and its many uses.

Forensic DNA analysis has been an ever-evolving and rapidly growing field. Used to detect individuals, determine ancestry, identify genetic disorders and map family history, DNA has a vast range of uses in criminal cases, advancing medical knowledge and personal interest. This presentation will explore the evolution of DNA research, how DNA is used in forensics, the myths about DNA, and how we can use it to preserve our natural environment.

About the presenter:

Lilijana Nicholls is a PhD Candidate at Murdoch University, researching environmental DNA. At age 16, Lilijana started her Bachelor of Forensic Biology and Toxicology, and Crime Science, and continued her studies with a Research Masters in Forensic Toxicology, where she realised her passion for research. Her current studies focus on improving methods for detecting species using naturally shed environmental DNA (eDNA), aligning with her passion for biosecurity and preserving native species. Passionate about science communication, Lilijana has led STEM outreach initiatives and mentorship programs to inspire the next generation of scientists into STEM careers. Drawing on her background in forensic science, academic research, youth work and STEM advocacy, Lilijana founded The Australian STEM Project, a WA-based mentorship and experience program for school-aged students.
