At the 21 April 2026 Ordinary Meeting of Council, Council endorsed a field extension option at John Connell Reserve in Leeming to support increased demand for local sporting infrastructure. The proposal includes a second 55m cricket pitch, up to four senior soccer fields, floodlighting and upgrades to maximise usable space, while limiting vegetation clearing to approximately 0.55ha.
The decision is subject to securing remaining funding from the Leeming Spartan Cricket Club, seeking external grant contributions, and amending clearing permit timeframes with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Environmental impacts will be offset through revegetation at nearby Ken Hurst Park, including planting around 30,000 native plants across 1.63ha.
The project aims to support club sustainability and provide more opportunities for community participation in sport, aligning with the City’s focus on creating healthy, inclusive and active communities.
