point waylen teaser

Environmental restoration is coming to Point Waylen to create better habitat for birds in the Melville Bird Sanctuary.

Project Information

The City of Melville is undertaking a major revitalisation of the Point Waylen foreshore with the Point Waylen Foreshore Restoration project. It will restore important habitat and enhance community connection to the river and the Melville Bird Sanctuary.

Point Waylen is a significant ecological area that is home to more than 131 bird species, including the critically endangered and internationally protected Eastern Curlew.

To address the negative effects of climate change and urban pressures, over 1.4 hectares will be revegetated with a diverse range of native species, and a larger foreshore buffer zone will be created to enhance and protect shoreline habitat.

Proposed works include:

  • Construction of a bird viewing area near the northern foreshore to enable the community to view local birdlife, the estuary, and Perth City
  • Construction of an open multi-purpose community area to enable a variety of groups to gather and share knowledge
  • Combination of sealed and informal pathways to navigate through the area
  • Interpretative signage with a combination of cultural and environmental knowledge displayed
  • Extensive revegetation to increase habitat availability for native flora and fauna

This project is a key action identified in the Attadale Alfred Cove Foreshore Masterplan (2022) and received grant funding from the Australian Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program and the WA Government’s Small-scale Election Commitment Program.

It will be delivered in partnership with the WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions as a co-land manager of the foreshore.
