Yagan Mia | Djinanginy invites you to slow down and look deeply. In Noongar, Djinanginy speaks to the act of looking, seeing and paying close attention. This exhibition brings together the voices, observations and creative responses of Noongar artists in a shared process of cultural mapping, grounded in deep family, cultural and ancestral connections to this place.
As custodians of this Boodja, the creatives at the heart of Yagan Mia | Djinanginy draw on knowledge carried through ancestors, moort and across generations. Their responses are shaped by lived cultural connection — walking, observing, listening, remembering, making and knowing — and by the stories, memories and relationships held within Country.
Central to this inaugural commission was the opportunity for cultural creatives to live and work on Country. Led by Jayden Boundry, with the cultural guidance of Ian Wilkes and documentation by Phil Sillifant, the project created space for an extended and direct relationship with place. For Jayden, this meant bringing his family and staying onsite at the Hickey Street cottages within Yagan Mia Wireless Hill. More than a place to work, it allowed him to be present within the landscape informing his practice — to observe its rhythms, spend time on Country and respond to what the place revealed over time.
Bringing together handcrafted cultural artefacts, photography, language and creative making, this site-responsive exhibition is a gentle unfolding of place. It honours what is seen, what is felt and what Boodja reveals over time with attention, care and connection.
