About Melville Midwinter

Melville Midwinter is a free, family-friendly night of intimate performances that pays tribute to the change of seasons and the winter solstice and will be held on Saturday, 21 June 2025.

Join us at 5.00pm when the gorgeous surrounds of Dyoondalup Point Walter Reserve become a stage for artists and performers. Bask in the magic and mystery of winter with an intimate, unique and thought-provoking community arts celebration.

Thanks to major supporter Lotterywest for a grant contribution to Melville Midwinter that helps us build community connections through arts and culture activities.

What to Expect

Experience the thrill of a wintery night outdoors wandering through a tapestry of music, movement and stories of the nature that surrounds you. Enjoy the warmth of food, drinks, crackling fires and community beneath the scintillating stars of winter’s longest night.

  • 5.00pm | Arrive before sunset to acknowledge Country by the fire as you enter, enjoy roving performers and a hot supper by the river.
  • 6.00pm | Follow the lanterns as they emerge and make your way up onto the hill to meander through a delightful trail of performance stations.
  • 7.00pm | Return to the foreshore for a finale performance.

Swim update: In line with recent Department of Health advice to temporarily avoid swimming and fishing in this part of the river, the City of Melville Midwinter team has withdrawn this year’s Jetty Jump due to potential contamination risks following a sewerage spill in the Alfred Cove area.

It's night-time, a swimmer in black one-piece bathing suit is seen from the waist down, walking into a the shallows of the river from the river beach.

Venue and Accessibility Information

Find out more about sound volume, crowds, and lighting

Sound volume

  • Low amplification to support performers and audience experience, no abrasive or loud sounds.

Crowdedness

  • Melville Midwinter is free and open to the public, but we aim for the event to not exceed more than 1600 patrons. Melville Midwinter is intended to be introspective, proximal and quiet so we strive to keep the space non-crowded.

Lighting

  • The event draws on lighting as a feature element but no strobing or flashing lights are used.
Find out more about wheelchair access, terrain and description of surrounds

Wheelchair Access

  • Point Walter features a footpath, which winds throughout the reserve and will be positioned as central as possible to each artist station for this event, for as much wheelchair accessibility as possible. Despite this, traversing across uneven ground will be required to access some performance stations.
  • The event takes place on an inclined reserve including the path.
  • The main stage will sit at the bottom of the reserve, in front of the foreshore and along a well paved area.
  • Catering will be set up along the paved area with full wheelchair access.

Terrain / Description of Surrounds

  • Point Walter Reserve is a large open space; the main stage is set near the river with a level paved area in front.
  • The audience area is an amphitheatre-like sloping hill accessed by a sloping path or limestone steps. Most patrons will be required to use the paths or traverse grass to reach the audience area.
  • The concert begins around sunset and concludes after dark.
Where is the event parking?
  • Main event parking (including ACROD parking) will be located at Point Walter Boat Ramp along Honour Ave (east) off Burke Drive. Patrons will be required to travel a few hundred metres along paved road and pathways to the event.
  • Additional ACROD parking will be located at the west entrance to the event if required.
Where are the accessible toilet locations?
  • Permanent accessible venue toilets are located near Walters Cafe at the east of the venue.
  • Portable accessible event toilets will also be in place to the west (jetty side) of the venue.
What food will be available?

Keep your hands and bellies warm with a delicious, nutritious mug of hot soup for purchase from Little Hawk Freo.

  • Aromatic spiced lentil
  • Hearty Mediterranean-style minestrone

Enjoy a sweet treat and bread to go with your soup. Available from 5.00pm until sold out - Bring Your Own (BYO) mug and spoon.
