Update
November 2025
There will be works happening on the boardwalk on Saturday, 29 November between 8.00am and 4.00pm.
Project Information
During a condition audit conducted by the City in 2022, it was found the boardwalk substructure including the structural beams and foundation are in poor and deteriorating condition, requiring significant remediation. While the structure will be rebuilt, the appearance of the boardwalk - including the decking and railings - will remain unchanged to maintain its original look and feel.
Considering the close proximity to the river, the upcoming remediation works required statutory approvals from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH), both of which were obtained by the City in 2024. Structural design was completed by Airey Taylor Consulting Engineers, and following a construction tender process, the contract was awarded to Advanteering Civil Engineers in May 2025.
Due to tidal constraints, construction can only be effectively undertaken during the low tide season. As such, works are scheduled for summer 2025/2026. During this period, the boardwalk will be closed to the public, with no access permitted from the south-western entry point through to the carpark at the end of Ardross Street. Refer to the proposed detour route map for cyclists and pedestrians for further details. The City’s appointed Contractor is now working on the approval process for their Construction and Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) from DBCA and will start works upon receipt.
