Project Information
The building contains asbestos-containing materials throughout its structure. Following an independent assessment and consideration by Council, demolition was identified as the safest and most effective long-term solution.
The work will include:
- establishing a secure work area
- safely removing asbestos-containing materials
- demolishing the building
- clearing, levelling and making the site safe.
Savana Environmental Pty Ltd, a licensed Class A asbestos removal contractor, will undertake the work.
Safety measures will include:
- temporary fencing and a secure exclusion zone
- licensed asbestos removal procedures
- dust suppression
- daily airborne asbestos monitoring during the removal work
- independent inspections and clearance certification before demolition proceeds.
Community Information
Areas outside the designated exclusion zone are considered safe. Daily airborne asbestos monitoring will provide additional assurance for nearby residents and reserve users. Residents may choose to take additional personal precautions during the active asbestos removal work, such as:
- closing windows
- bringing laundry inside
- keeping pets indoors.
These additional precautions are optional. They are not required because of an identified risk outside the exclusion zone.
The City has provided nearby residents and key stakeholders with information about:
- the demolition process
- asbestos safety measures
- air-monitoring arrangements
- project timing
- temporary access restrictions.
The City has also provided opportunities for residents to ask questions directly of City representatives and the asbestos removal contractor.
Timeline
Work is scheduled to begin on Friday, 25 September 2026 and is expected to take approximately two weeks. The planned stages are:

Because of the amount and location of these materials, renovating the building or removing only part of the asbestos would not provide a practical or reliable long-term solution. Demolition will remove the risk associated with future deterioration or accidental damage to the building.
