The City of Melville community is enjoying the improvements at the refurbished Blue Gum Community Centre in Brentwood.

This week a special opening event encouraged community members to join dignitaries in celebrating the Centre and what it has brought back to the community since the rejuvenated facilities reopened.

This project is one part of the City delivering the outcomes of the Council Plan for the Future 2024–2034, which was informed by the aspirations and future priorities of our diverse community. In particular, this revamped facility provides more inclusive multipurpose spaces that encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.

The works at Blue Gum included new flooring, reconfiguration of the lobby areas which improved passive surveillance for child safety, creation of a new meeting room that’s available for public bookings, new accessibility ramps, improvements to wet areas in the creche, and car park improvements.

The project was completed at a cost of $3.7million. The refurbishment works were made possible with the assistance of a Federal Government grant of $13,000, which contributed to the public access computer room and the entry artwork featuring a magnificent first nations artwork.

This facility has had a long history, providing a gathering space for diverse community groups across several decades.

City of Melville Mayor Katy Mair, was joined by Member for Tangney Sam Lim, City Councillors, and CEO Gail Bowman, to officially reopen the Centre on Monday, 4 May.

She said that ensuring City facilities continue to offer the best opportunities for connection for decades to come is part of delivering the Council's Plan for the Future 2024-2034.

“Our residents deserve accessible and inviting facilities to enable them to build and maintain connections at every stage of life.” The Mayor said.

“Maintaining our community facilities and delivering refurbishments like these ensures we can continue to support our community in maintaining a healthy and connected lifestyle.

“It’s great to see the upgraded facilities already being enjoyed by the community.”
