Changeover to paperless library notices
What is changing?
Library notices for holds and overdues ceased being sent by post as from 1 July 2018.
Over 90% of these notices are sent by email to library members. Notices can be sent via SMS for holds and overdues if library members do not have email.
Why is there a change?
City of Melville aims to minimise its impact on the environment. Moving to paperless library notifications will assist in moving toward this goal. In addition, over recent years the cost of postage has greatly increased and along with the number of days needed for delivery. Sending all hold and overdue notices electronically results in faster notifications and financial savings which will go towards providing improved library services.
What do I need to do if I don’t already receive notices electronically?
A number of options are available:
- Contact your local library branch and provide your email address
- If you don’t have an email address, provide your mobile number to the library so you can receive notices via SMS – these are in a briefer format than emailed notices.
- If you have neither email address nor mobile number, you can check your library account online to keep up-to-date with holds or item due dates. Alternatively, you may phone or visit the library to check details of holds and items on loan.
How to Use the Library Catalogue
Searching Logging In
To find items in our catalogue, enter your search term into the search bar and then click SEARCH. You can also use the drop down menus on the left to limit your search to more specific results, or use the Advanced search button on the right hand side for more precise searching.
On the next page, you can use the options under Limit Search Results to filter your results. These options appear on the left hand side of the screen, and allow you to limit your search results by format, author, subject and more.
If you are a member of City of Melville Libraries, click Log In at the top of your screen – you will need your library card number and PIN. Don’t worry if you forget to log in, you can still search the catalogue and will be prompted to log in if you want to place a hold or download an eBook or eAudiobook. Not a member of the library? You can join online and log in to reserve items before visiting the library to complete your registration.
If you are not already a member and are aged 18 or over, you can register by clicking the Join Online button on the catalogue home page. Joining online will allow you to place holds on library materials immediately. To borrow items and access our collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks, complete your membership and collect your library card by visiting one of our libraries and showing your ID to a staff member.
Once you have logged in, click My Account at the top of your screen to view and manage your personal information, checkouts, recent loan history, and holds. My Account replaces the My Details screen you may have used in our old catalogue.
With our online library catalogue, you can create personal lists. You may like to use this feature to create lists of items to borrow in future. To create a new list, make sure you are logged in, select My Lists from the top right of the page and then click on the ‘Add list’ icon on the left hand side. You can then add any items that you wish directly from the catalogue.
If you find an item you would like to reserve, click the Place Hold button to request it – next, select your Pickup Library and click Place Hold(s) to confirm your reservation. You will be notified by email or SMS (for those without an email address) once your item is available to collect.
How do I renew my borrowed items? What is the difference between Digital Checkouts and Library Checkouts?
After logging in, click My Account and then select the Checkouts tab. Tick the checkbox to the left of the title(s) that you wish to renew, and then click Renew.
Borrowed items will be automatically renewed on the due date if not requested by another member.
Borrowed items are not automatically renewed a second time. If you would like to retain items for a further 3 weeks, you may login to My Account and renew them if they are not requested by another member.
How do I borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks using the online catalogue?
Digital Checkouts displays a list of all the eBooks and eAudiobooks that you currently have checked out. Library Checkouts displays a list of all the physical library items that you currently have checked out.
How do I find out how many holds have been placed on a title?
eBooks and eAudiobooks display in the catalogue search results, just like regular library items. To borrow these items simply click Download, or click Place Hold if it is not currently available.
How do I cancel or suspend a hold?
For physical items, the number of existing holds is displayed below the author and title details. This doesn’t happen for eBook and eAudiobooks. To find out how long you need to wait to access a digital title, use the website or app of the eBook / eAudiobook provider. Follow the links from www.melvillecity.com.au/elibrary
I need to update my details, how can I do this?
After logging in, click My Account and then select the Holds tab. Tick the checkbox to the left of the hold(s) that you wish to cancel or suspend, and then click Cancel Hold(s) or Suspend Hold(s).
How do I get back to the catalogue home page?
To update your email address, click My Account and then select the Personal Information tab and click Edit Email Address. If you need to update your address, phone number, or any other information, contact library staff.
I cannot find the title I have been searching for, how can I request it?
Click the ‘home’ button, which appears at the left hand side of the search bar:
How do I reset my PIN?
If you have searched the catalogue and cannot find what you are looking for, you can make an Inter-Library Loan Requests.
I’ve lost my library card, how do I get a new library card number?
At the Log In screen just click Forgot my PIN, then enter your library card number. You will be emailed instructions for resetting you PIN.
The catalogue is not displaying correctly, what should I do?
Contact library staff to organise a replacement library card.
Can I pay online for a library item I've lost or damaged?
Make sure your internet browser is up to date. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer 11. If you continue to have problems, please contact library staff.
Yes, you can pay online via the "My Account" page of the library catalogue. Login using your library card number and PIN, click on the Bills tab, select the item/s to pay for and then click the Make Payment button. The payment gateway accepts Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards.
Note: If you find a lost library item before paying for it, please return it and all charges will be waived immediately. Once you pay for a library item, no refund is possible.
If you don’t wish to pay online you, may pay using cash at any of our five libraries. EFTPOS and credit card payments can be made at AH Bracks Library + Creative Space.

Interlibrary Loan Request
*** PLEASE NOTE: It may take several weeks or months before all WA public libraries re-join the interlibrary loan service after their COVID-19 closures so there may be instances where it is not possible for us to obtain your requested item.
Our form is only used to request items you were unable to locate in the City of Melville's library catalogue. Items requested on interlibrary loan usually take at least one week to arrive, and may take significantly longer than this if they are extremely popular titles.
Note: We can no longer obtain any items acquired within the last 12 months or any DVDS other than series over 12 months old via interlibrary loan.
