Escapade School Holiday Program

Join us on an Escapade this April School holidays!

We’re super excited to launch a jam-packed program with lots of opportunities to create, play, illustrate and write your way through the school holidays. With activities for all ages, there is something for everyone.

To help you plan your child’s day as part of the City of Melville Escapade School Holiday program, we have provided a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Writing Wild with Dr Nandi Chinna

What words lie in the landscape? Join poet Dr Nandi Chinna on a curated stroll through the natural world, listening to and being quiet in nature. After exploring the unique environment of Wireless Hill or Goolugatup, develop your own poetic response to the walk and the world around you. 

Artist bio: Nandi is an award winning poet, and facilitates workshops on the art of Poepatetics — the practice of walking and writing in order to connect with the natural world and foster creative responses to nature. Her latest poetry book The Future Keepers (Fremantle Press 2019) was shortlisted for the 2020 Prime Ministers Literary Award, and Highly Commended for the Victorian Premiers Prize 2020.

Booking information: These workshops are intended for children to attend independently. Parents will need to sign participants in and out of the workshop, and provide relevant medical / emergency contact information. All staff have Working with Children checks and will supervise children throughout the duration of the workshop. 

This is a sign-in workshop. We will email you a Child Participation Consent Form for completion and return prior to your child’s attendance at the workshops. Completed forms should be emailed to creativeworkshops@melville.wa.gov.au at least 24 hours prior to attendance.

NB – this workshop will move indoors if the weather is unsuitable. 

Crazy characters with Matty Mitchell

Matty Mitchell knows a thing or two about crazy characters after writing a book about a missing sock! Join him to create your own crazy characters and illustrate them using the Procreate app. 

Artist bio: Matty was born and raised in Australia, lived in Seattle for 11 years ago and has recently moved back to Fremantle with his wife, son, daughter and dog. If Matty's not chasing (or being chased by) his two munchkins, he's drawing, and if he's not drawing then he can be found making something creative, and if he's not creating something then he is skateboarding.

Amazing amulets with Kaitlyn Elsegood

Work with artist Kaitlyn Elsegood to create and decorate your own jewellery piece to take home. Using native flora, found materials and pieces of pasta, you can fashion your own statement amulet or necklace to wear for all occasions.

Artist bio: Kaitlyn Elsegood is an independent artist based in Waylyup (Fremantle). Her work spans drawing, ceramics, sculpture and photography. Her practice is currently focused on national identity, exploring division within local communities and pursuing opportunities to expand her skills in creating art.

Heroic Headdresses with Kaitlyn Elsegood

Create a heroic headdress inspired by Byzantine Empress Theodora, an early champion for women and refugee rights. Work with artist Kaitlyn Elsegood to create your own headdress, worthy of a mighty Emperor or Empress!

Drawing en plein air with Ross Potter

Join acclaimed artist Ross Potter in the beautiful grounds of Goolugatup Heathcote to draw the landscape while in the landscape. Continuing the long tradition of drawing in nature, Ross will lead young artists of all levels through the process of drawing en plein air. 

Artist bio: Ross Potter is a Kamilaroi man living in Perth who works with graphite and pencil to produce highly detailed representations of animals, minerals and vegetables. Through magnifying microscopic features, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention, while telling compelling stories of everyday life.
