City of Melville Libraries hold a range of fun events for children during the school holidays.

Flight is the theme for our school holiday activities program at Libraries, Museums and Heathcote Gallery.

Paper Planes

Learn how to fold and throw your own handcrafted paper plane. Make easy airplanes and more advanced paper planes. Which model can fly the highest and the longest distance? Did you know that the current Australian distance record by a student is 35.2 metres?

Kite Kinetics

Did you know that an Englishman who migrated to Australia invented the box kite? Kite man Michael Alvares from Kite Kinetics will guide you through to make your own Bermuda hexagon kite to decorate. Take it home or to the park to fly it.

Birds of Prey

Get to see the powerful birds of prey up close and personal. Yvonne from the West Australian Birds of Prey Centre at Whiteman Park will introduce you to some of her raptors. You’ll have to come along to see which ones!

First Aid Heroes with Constable Care

Constable Care Puppet Shows are coming to our libraries for Safer Melville Month in October. In partnership with St John Ambulance, a new performance called First Aid Heroes has been developed and is suitable for younger children.

Birds and Butterflies

Decorate your room with a collection of bird and butterfly paper crafts. Make one, make a few. Origami birds and stained glass butterflies  to name just a few.. A collection of crafts with some simple craft for the younger ones.

Heathcote Cultural Precinct

Flight  by Ross Potter

Local artist Ross Potter will be exploring flight in his feathers based workshops.  Examine the intricate structure of feathers with Ross then sketch a selection of feathers!
Not only will you gain a deeper appreciation feathers and birds, but you will also learn simple techniques to capture subjects and how to work with graphite on paper.

First session suitable for 7-11 year olds and second session suitable for 8-17 year olds

Wireless Hill Museum

The Wonderful World of Bees with Luke de Laeter

Luke is a 15 year old beekeeper who is passionate about bees and loves sharing his knowledge with other children. In this two hour workshop, Luke explores the world of bees and inspires children to be more aware of the importance of bees in our environment.  Come along and learn about bee keeping tools, suits, the different parts of a hive, inside a hive, the life cycle of a bee, different types of honey bees and our own native bees.

Suitable for ages 5 to 12.
