Aboriginal rights groups began to boycott 26 January in protest of the treatment of First Nations Australians from the early 1920s. These protests were formalised as the Day of Mourning from the 1930s and became an annual event to draw attention to the terrible treatment of First Nations Australians.
For many, January 26 is not a day to celebrate. In acknowledgement of this, we invite Noongar leaders Anthony Kickett and Tanesha Bennell to share their thoughts, stories, and reflections on the Day of Mourning. Conversations like these allow community to come together and provide a safe space for truth-telling. Anthony and Tanesha will be in conversation with City of Melville’s First Nations Coordinator Aimee Ryan.
Light refreshments will be provided.
