Bushfire Alert - Karel Avenue A Bushfire Advice is in place for people on both sides of Karel Avenue in an area bounded by Leach Highway to the north, Camm Avenue to the west, Parry Avenue and Burrendah Boulevard to the south and The Escarpment the east in parts of Willetton and Bull Creek. The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as the fire is now contained but not controlled. There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger, you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes. Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre is now known as the City of Melville EcoHub!

 

Join Amy from My Nonna Life, a passionate gardener and cook, as she shares her journey of embracing her inner Nonna and preserving homegrown food. In this live cooking demo, Amy will showcase delicious recipes that make the most of summer’s bounty.

You’ll have the opportunity to taste and sample her creations while learning how to maximize the value of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Amy will share tips on how to cook summertime ingredientsto get the most value from money spent, reduce food waste and level up cooking at home!

Amy will be preparing and preserving summer ingredients using different methods and techniques including:

  • tomatoes (how to prepare for freezing, how to make a basic tomato sauce, how to alter for different cuisines)
  • cucumbers (how to make several basic types of cucumber pickle, how to alter recipes and how to store)

Amy has a wealth of information regarding buying and picking produce with a focus on saving money, growing produce in small spaces, ideas to reduce food waste, how to store/consume and will touch on preserving options for long term shelf storage.

Come get inspired and take these techniques back to your own kitchen!

Type of event and expectations

Adult learning space - guests are requested to turn phones to silent, where possible, remain seated for the duration of the event, be respectful to facilitator and attendees alike and exit discreetly when needed. This event is unlikely to be suitable for children.

Accessibility

Event is mostly sitting.

Please consider using public transportation. A bus stop, just a 2-minute walk away, is conveniently located near EcoHub and services multiple routes.

EcoHub is located at 555 Leach Highway, Winthrop in the Piney Lakes reserve. To reach us, if heading westbound, take the first left after Murdoch Drive on Leach Highway. If coming from the Fremantle area, continue on Leach Hwy across Murdoch Drive and use the designated U-turn just after the lights to move to the westbound lanes. Go back through the lights at Murdoch Drive and take the first left. Please park in the signed public carpark.
