'Caput Mortuum’ is a Latin phrase which translates into ‘deadhead’. The name is derived from a pigment; cardinal red; that is a very dense red- purple iron oxide pigment often used in portrait painting. In alchemy, caput mortuum refers to the worthless residue that remains after a chemical process.

This eclectic multifaceted exhibition celebrates life and death in the form of social commentary. Through humour, Ian Fosters’ collection of paintings, ceramic sculptures and installations act as ruminations on existence, transience and human mortality.

An artist and historian, Fosters’ research and practice across a broad spectrum of media is inspired by the historical ambiguities and dichotomies that constitute this surreal world we share. Ian holds a B.A. at Edith Cowan University, along with a postgraduate diploma in Curating and Museum Studies and a Master of Arts in Art History at the Australian National University. He has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally.
