Canning Bridge Place Grants 2022-2023 recipients
The recipients of the first Canning Bridge Place Grants program have been announced.
 
Nine shopfront improvement and activation grants were approved, for a total of more than $90,000 to support place improvements to be facilitated by local businesses and the community in the Canning Bridge Activity Centre.
 
Canning Bridge Place Grants are reinvesting parking funds generated from the Canning Bridge Activity Centre for the benefit of all who live, work and visit the area that encourage a safer, more active and vibrant community and business precinct.
 
The 2023-24 program is now open and will close on Tuesday, 30 April 2024. For further information see the program page.

The successful applicants in the 2022-2023 program were:
Applicant: Praline Patisserie

Project Name: Praline’s Christmas Market 2023

Summary: French Christmas markets were hosted on the weekend of Saturday, 9 December to Sunday, 10 December 2023 at the Canning Bridge Community Space next to Praline Patisserie.

Grant Amount: $2,230 plus GST

Location: Canning Bridge Community Space and Praline Patisserie, 63 Kishorn Road, Mount Pleasant
Applicant: Curate Arts Incorporated

Project Name: Getting Creative with Curate at Canning Bridge

Summary: Curate’s popular Recycle Instrument Project hosted a series of six sustainable creative arts workshops. These subsidised workshops were $25 per person.
  • Two x Blues & Botanics Workshops – utilise discarded sheet music diverted from landfill along with pressed dried flowers to create beautiful artistic creations in frames.
  • Two x LP’s & Me Workshops – utilising recovered LP’s to create art ready to hang on your wall.
  • Two x Time & Tempo Workshops – utilise recovered LP’s to create working clocks.

Grant Amount: $4,568.77 plus GST

Location: Canning Bridge Community Space, 63 Kishorn Road, Mount Pleasant.
Applicant: Canning Bridge Licensed Post Office (LPO)

Project Name: Post Office Exterior Revitilisation

Summary: A First Nations mural design by Kevin Bynder was painted on the Australia Post exterior wall and the signage and awnings were updated.

Grant Amount: $11,072.45 plus GST

Location: Canning Bridge Licensed Post Office, 902 Canning Highway, Applecross.
Applicant: Clancy’s Fish Pub Canning Bridge

Project Name: Clancy's Fish Pub Canning Bridge Shopfront Improvement

Summary: Revitalising the façade, adding in new lighting and upgrading the alfresco area. A new vibrant mural featuring the iconic Canning Bridge pelicans was painted on the top level of the building and an installation of coloured up-lighting at the base of the mature trees in the garden bed under the pedestrian overpass. Separate to the City’s grant, Clancy’s installed a new awning to improve and encourage alfresco dining.

Grant Amount: $27,800 plus GST

Location: Clancy’s Fish Pub Canning Bridge, 903 Canning Highway, Applecross
Applicant: Creative Kids Art Club

Project Name: Canning Bridge - Flora and Fauna Public Art Project

Summary: Creative Kids Art Club hosted a series of art workshops based on the flora and fauna from the City of Melville. The workshops were aimed at adults and for any abilities and are offered at a subsidised cost of $25 per person. The workshops were held on Fridays and Saturdays over three hours starting Friday, 18 August until Friday, 13 October 2023. A total of 14 artworks have been chosen to be turned into footpath decals and installed along Kishorn Road and surrounding area. The chosen artworks were displayed at a three day exhibition at the Canning Bridge Community Space from Friday, 27 October to Sunday, 29 October 2023.

Grant Amount: $8,887.50 plus GST

Location: Creative Kids Art Club, 61 Kishorn Road, Mount Pleasant and the Exhibition will be at the Canning Bridge Community Space, 63 Kishorn Road

14 artworks were selected from the 10 art workshops and have been printed and exhibited as footpath decals. These have been installed along Kishorn Road, Helm Street and the Esplanade until mid May 2024. For the full list of artworks and locations see the Canning Bridge Flora & Fauna Decal Trail.
Applicant: Mount Pleasant Dental

Project Name: Tree Light Installation

Summary: Mount Pleasant Dental have gotten into the Christmas spirit for a number of years, decorating the large tree out the front of their building with Christmas baubles. They were excited to have received a Canning Bridge Place grant to install a permanent decorative uplighting option that can be used throughout the year.

Grant Amount: $9,240 plus GST

Location: Mount Pleasant Dental, 860 Canning Highway, Applecross
Applicant: ConnectGroups Support Groups Association WA Inc.

Project Name: Canning Bridge Support Groups Awareness Expo

Summary:  As part of Support Groups Awareness Week, ConnectGroups hosted a free community Expo on Saturday, 21 October from 10.00am to 3.00pm. The event showcased local Support Groups, raised awareness about peer support, health and wellbeing, and provided opportunities for local community members to access support for themselves and their loved ones.

The event was held next to ConnectGroups’ office in their carpark, activating Kishorn Road in Applecross, and featured 20+ stallholders, live music entertainment, and a face painter; making it a great day out for the whole family.

Grant Amount: $10,528.60 plus GST

Applicant: Wellness with Farah

Project Name: Free Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi classes during October

Summary: Participants were able to enjoy flowing exercises to reduce stress, improve mood, aid agility and strengthen the body, as well as connect with others within the community. A series of three different types of fitness class were held throughout October 2023. 

Grant Amount: $3,098.80 plus GST
Applicant: The Rowing Pavilion

Project Name: Better Shared: Community Space at The Rowing Pavilion

Summary: A new mural has been installed on the north side wall and two new bike racks.

Grant Amount: $14,360 plus GST
