Directions from Young People

The Directions from Young People is our key informing document for how and why we work with young people. It includes direct input from our young residents so they can guide us on how we work with the community.

This year, young residents in our community will have their voices heard when our Directions from Young People 2021 Plan is developed. The plan helps keep us up to date with the interests, needs and aspirations of our young residents, and how to best respond to them.

In the past the plan has guided best practice strategies to help provide youth-friendly, safe places and opportunities for young people to catch up with friends at events, activities and informally. We heard from young people about their concerns related to school and study stress, anxiety and mental health, bullying, alcohol and other drugs. We continue to work with professional services to give our young residents the opportunity to learn and develop life skills and to participate in their community.

Applications for a consultant to develop the plan closed on Friday, 29 January 2021 and the successful consultant will work alongside young people every step of the way to develop a new plan. The consultant will provide us with a new youth engagement framework and resource kit to guide our staff in best practice strategies for engaging with young people in our community.

As the plan rolls out there will be lots of opportunity to get involved and have your say. Stay tuned to our website, social media and Melville Talks for more info!

Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia

We are working with the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) to conduct the Directions from Young People 2021 plan and to inform us about how best to include young people in our work.

YACWA is the peak non-government youth organisation in Western Australia. They operate primarily as a human rights organisation that seeks to address the exclusion of young people in a rapidly changing society.

YACWA’s continued vision for Western Australia is one that celebrates and engages young people in all aspects of the community. Their role is to strengthen the trust, cooperation, collaboration; professionalism and voice of the non-government youth service sector to better serve the young people of Western Australia.
