Married with three children, and now grandchildren, Russell has lived in the City of Melville since 1983 and worked as a Senior Teacher at Wesley College from 1983 before retiring to take up the Mayoral role full-time in 2012.
Russell was first elected as a councillor in 1991 and to the position of Mayor in 2007. Since then, he was re-elected as Mayor in 2011 and 2015.
During this period he has been a member and ex-officio member of all the City's committees and a proud board member of two State Government peak bodies - the Disability Services Commission and the Statutory Planning Commission.
Russell is focused on a cycle of assessment and improvement and is committed to developing an even better City of Melville.
He believes maintaining contact with the community is essential to deriving feedback and provides an open door policy to ratepayers with concerns and regularly makes himself available at shopping centres around the city to meet informally with the community.
