Councillor June Barton OAM JP

Suburbs: Alfred Cove, Attadale, Bicton

Background

An experienced manager of cost-effective childrens services, most recently as Childrens Services Manager for the City of Cockburn, I am professionally qualified in nursing, public health and social work.

Professional Experience

I am professionally qualified in nursing, public health and social science with qualifications from Southampton University, Victoria University of Wellington and The Royal London, Queen Charlotte's, and Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospitals.

I have served on a variety of public advisory bodies and professional bodies and worked effectively with government, political, social, cultural, and commercial organisations. I was founder and currently Patron of Melville Cares, served as Mayor of Melville for two terms, was a member of the Fremantle Cemetery Board, and am a Freeman of the City of Melville. I received the ceremonial Key of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan for my support for exchange between the Cities of Melville and Takarazuka.

I have been a Justice of the Peace since 1989, and my local government and community contributions were acknowledged by the Medal of the Order of Australia, and I was named Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International, supported by all the Rotary Clubs in the City of Melville: Applecross, Attadale, Booragoon, Leeming, and Melville.

Interests

My interests and activities are centered on people and their activities, assisting members of local, state, national and international communities. Iam an Honorary Life Member of Melville Community Arts Association and Patron of the Melville Theatre Company. I was State Council Member of Girl Guides Association Western Australia and member of Western Australian Children's Advisory Council for several years. I initiated and chaired a Multicultural Advisory Committee that developed an access and equity policy for City of Melville, obtaining Federal Government funding to survey multicultural needs in Melville.

As well as spending as much time as I can with my family, particularly my three grandchildren, I like travelling to interesting and unusual places, including observing total solar eclipses in the Libyan desert, on Easter Island, and on the Great Barrier Reef.

I enjoy my role as one of your local Councillors and am always available to assist you.
