Kids take over City of Melville library for the Bizarre Library Extravaganza

5 November 2025

The Bizarre Library Extravaganza features music, games, creative challenges, and delicious treats.

The City of Melville Libraries team is putting kids in the driver’s seat through a free, family-friendly event designed by kids, for kids.

The Bizarre Library Extravaganza features music, games, creative challenges, and delicious treats at AH Bracks Library on Saturday, 22 November.

Visitors can take part in the LEGO Battle of the Bricks, tackle the Great Library Hunt, dance with the DJ, climb the inflatable rock wall, and even design their own desserts to enjoy or take home.

The event is the result of an exciting collaboration between Booragoon Primary School’s Year 5 and 6 students, author Cristy Burne, and the City of Melville Libraries team.

The project allowed students to explore creativity, communication and collaboration through real-world learning, while reimagining what their local library could be for young people in their community.

During two hands-on workshops, students worked with author Cristy Burne and library staff to dream up, plan and promote the event themselves.

They explored ideas, tackled creative challenges, built confidence and learned to work together.

The result is a program packed with activities that reflect what young people want from their library, a vibrant, welcoming place where their voices are heard and creativity can thrive.

This project is all about empowering young voices and showing students that the library is their space — where their ideas, interests, and creativity are welcomed and celebrated.

What the students said:
“I liked the level of trust and responsibility.”
“I loved having the opportunity to have our voice heard.”
“I loved having control of what is happening in our community.”

These reflections show the pride and ownership the students feel in bringing their ideas to life. The Bizarre Library Extravaganza is a celebration of their imagination and teamwork, and a reminder that libraries are places where young people can shape their own creative futures.

Comments attributed to City of Melville Mayor Katy Mair:

“The City of Melville is committed to providing a range of inclusive activities and events for children, young people and families, and the Bizarre Library Extravaganza is a great example of how libraries are so much more than books, they’re creative spaces that inspire collaboration, imagination and lifelong learning,” said Mayor Katy Mair.

“At the City of Melville, we do more than listen to children and young people. We create space to hear them, support them, and celebrate their impact. This creative learning project brings that commitment to life and reflects the voices of our community.

“This project highlights what’s possible when creativity, learning, and community come together. It’s exciting to see children and young people take the lead and bring their ideas to life.”
