Power-saving skills are in your hands with new DIY Home Energy Audit Kits

12 March 2025

The City of Melville is making it easier for residents to become more energy-efficient with the introduction of Do-It-Yourself Home Energy Audit Kits.

The City of Melville is making it easier for residents to become more energy-efficient with the introduction of Do-It-Yourself Home Energy Audit Kits, available to borrow from local libraries.

As part of the City’s commitment to supporting sustainable resource use, these kits will help households reduce energy costs and use, contributing to the City’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

With easy-to-use tools and clear instructions, these kits will help residents quickly identify areas of energy loss, such as gaps in insulation, faulty seals, or inefficient appliances.

The kit also helps assess household energy consumption and water flow rates.

The Home Energy Audit Kits are part of a pilot program involving more than 40 local councils, delivered in partnership with the State Government, Switch Your Thinking, and Energy Policy WA.

More than 100 libraries and Community Resource Centres across the state will offer the kits for loan.

Each kit contains:
  • A manual with step-by-step instructions, safety guidelines, an equipment checklist, and additional resources.
  • A thermal imaging camera to detect draughts, insulation gaps, faulty fridge seals, and hot water temperature.
  • A Power-Mate to measure energy consumption and running costs of appliances.
  • A basin flow measuring cup to check water flow rates from tapware.
  • A thermometer to measure the temperature of rooms, fridges, and freezers.

Starting Wednesday, 12 March, four City of Melville libraries will offer the kits for loan, including Civic Square Library, AH Bracks Library + Creative Space, Bull Creek Library, and Wilgi Kaartdijin Mia Willagee Library.

Residents must be registered library members and complete a simple consent form to borrow a kit.

The kits will be available for in-person collection and can be loaned for free for two weeks.

Kits should be returned in person during library hours at the library where they were collected.

This program is one of many initiatives by the State Government to help households and businesses reduce energy use, lower bills, and address climate change.
