Melville blossoms with WA Tree Fest again this autumn

14 March 2025

City of Melville is working with more than 20 local governments from around the state to raise awareness about the importance of trees with the WA Tree Festival.

  • City of Melville is working with more than 20 local governments from around the state to raise awareness about the importance of trees with the WA Tree Festival from 12 April to 10 May 2025.

  • ‘Roots and Shoots’ celebrity gardener Sabrina Hahn will host a number of workshops across the festival’s four weeks.

High profile horticulturalist Sabrina Hahn will lead a range of workshops over the festival which highlights the City’s commitment to protecting and enhancing its urban forest as part of its natural environment.

Topics include living soils and how to improve garden microbiomes, learning which backyard trees are best for providing food for the endangered Black Cockatoo and tips on how gardens can remain productive in a warming, drying climate.

City of Melville Festival organiser and Urban Forest Education and Engagement Officer Amy Warner says Melville is a local government area known for our iconic streetscapes like the Jacaranda-lined avenues in Applecross.

“People come from all over Perth to enjoy City of Melville’s parklands and beautiful natural areas and established trees are an important part of their appeal,” says Ms Warner.

“The Festival runs annually and is aimed at increasing awareness of the many benefits of trees like their ability to keep our streets cooler; provide food sources and habitat for local fauna and improve human health too.”

Comments attributed to City of Melville Mayor Katy Mair:

Mayor Katy Mair says Melville is excited to team up with other local governments to bring attention to the importance of trees and the impacts of tree canopy loss in the fourth annual WA Tree Festival.

“The City’s priority is to protect and enhance our natural environment, ecosystems and biodiversity and the WA Tree Festival perfectly aligns with this objective,” says Mayor Mair.

“The Festival is not just for City of Melville residents or even restricted to garden green thumbs but is going to be interesting to anyone who wants to know more about the natural environment in which they live and how to make it better.

“For example, topics like ‘Inspired Infill’, presented by the team from the highly innovative Forever Project, are for anyone who wants advice on designing a home using sustainable design principle to create beautiful and liveable spaces.

“The festival aims to unite local councils and members of the community through a variety of events and activities that are fun, educational, interactive and engaging for people of all ages and interests.”
