City of Melville to take part in LED streetlight pilot

31 March 2025

In partnership with Western Power, we’re replacing traditional streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights in select suburbs.

In partnership with Western Power, we’re pleased to announce that we’re replacing traditional streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights in the suburbs of Applecross, Bateman, Brentwood, Kardinya, Myaree, Willagee and Winthrop as part of a pilot project commencing in April.

LED lighting has become the dominant technology for most new streetlighting upgrades around the world. In Australia, 57 percent of Australia’s streetlight portfolio have been converted to LEDs.

The City of Melville is one of only three Local Governments across Western Power’s network to take part in the trial, which supports the State's decarbonisation goals, whilst also providing the following benefits to residents and Local Governments:

  • Improved public safety - with enhanced, targeted illumination making neighbourhoods safer.
  • Lower life cycle cost – LEDs have a longer lifespan, improved energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs.
  • Better for the environment – LEDs don’t contain the hazardous substances present in older lights and will reduce streetlight-related CO2 emissions on average by around 60%.
  • Enabling innovation – LEDs have the ability to include ‘smart’ lighting features in the future.

New LED lighting may appear brighter compared to older streetlights, which is largely due to the decreasing performance and lower light output of older lights. LED lights can create a more focused light, at lower power usage, which minimises glare and reduces light spill onto properties in most situations.
