Public space boost as Moreau Mews Town Square design approved

18 June 2025

Public open space in Canning Bridge is getting a boost with the City of Melville Council approving the concept plan for the Moreau Mews Town Square.

Public open space in Canning Bridge is getting a boost with the City of Melville Council approving the concept plan for the Moreau Mews Town Square at the June 2025 Ordinary Meeting of Council last night Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

In line with the City of Melville’s objective of creating activated spaces, the 50-52 Kishorn Road and 23, 29 and 31 Moreau Mews sites in Applecross will be transformed into a vibrant town square public open space area in the heart of the Canning Bridge precinct.

The approved concept plan includes open turf for recreation, a shelter and bbq area, playspace, interactive water feature, open space for community events, a café/community space, accessible toilets and public art.

Council’s approval of the design follows two rounds of community engagement, with the first in November and December 2024 focusing on the community’s aspirations which led to three concepts for the community to have its say during the second phase of community engagement in April 2025.

Community feedback on parking was split almost 50/50 during the second round of engagement, and so the Council in its latest decision chose to follow the original decision from the April 2023 to convert 100% of the site to public open space.

The approved design will be further refined through the next stage of development which is detailed design.

The City’s aim is to transform the area into a green, welcoming space where the community can relax, engage in leisure activities, and connect with one another.

Construction for the Moreau Mews Town Square is planned to commence in the 2026-2027 financial year following procurement in the latter part of 2025-2026.

The approval of the concept plan for Moreau Mews Town Square follows the progress of another public open space in Canning Bridge with the recent announcement from Lotterywest for a $465,000 grant for the establishment of the nearby park on The Esplanade in Mount Pleasant.

Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley, local member Bateman MLA Kim Giddens, who also made a commitment of $150,000 for the Esplanade Park, and representatives from Lotterywest helped announce the funding in late May.

The Lotterywest support for the park on The Esplanade will help fund the seating and gathering spaces for community interaction, greenery and native plantings to create shaded areas and enhance environmental sustainability, the children’s playground to foster inclusive play and active engagement for all age groups and art installations, dual naming and integrated storytelling to respect and celebrate First Nations culture.

Construction for the park on The Esplanade is expected to commence before the end of 2025.
