Melville’s biggest open studio event launches soon

8 April 2025

Explore Melville’s thriving arts community as Melville Open Studios returns for its biggest year ever.

Art lovers and the wider community are invited to step inside the creative spaces of some of Perth’s most talented artists as Melville Open Studios returns for its biggest year ever, on Saturday, 3 May and Sunday, 4 May.

Following a record-breaking 2024 event, which generated more than $75,000 in direct economic turnover for local participating artists, this year’s edition will see more artists taking part, more home studios opened, and more opportunities to engage with the community.

In line with the City of Melville’s objective of providing inclusive events and cultural activities, Melville Open Studios welcomes the public to step inside the private working spaces of artists, to witness works in progress, and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces directly from the makers themselves.

Featuring a diverse range of more than 110 artists across multiple disciplines – from ceramics to printmaking to painting – this event is a rare opportunity for the public to step inside the world of working studios and gain first-hand knowledge about each participant’s creative process.

With the number of home studios doubling from 2024, visitors are invited to explore more than  20 artists within their home studios as well as key artist hubs at Atwell House, Goolugatup Heathcote, Studio Door, Feld & Co, and Home Hub.

The event has become a key driver for Melville’s creative economy, ensuring that revenue flows straight into the hands of artists while also positioning the city as a major arts destination in Perth.

“The value of this event for artists cannot be overstated,” says local ceramicist and Melville Open Studios artist Robbie Kerr, who will take part in the event for the second time.

“Melville Open Studios connects us directly with the public in an authentic and personal way. The ability to engage with visitors and sell work without gallery commissions is an incredible opportunity.”

This year, Melville Open Studios continues to expand its reach and accessibility, with the return of the guided bus tours, allowing visitors to seamlessly travel between hubs and studio locations. Bookings for the bus tours are essential, with the service selling out last year.

The event has also attracted increased sponsorship support this year, further cementing its place as a major cultural event within Western Australia.

City of Melville Creative Producer of Arts & Culture Zoe Atkinson highlighted the event’s growing significance.

“This event is now a cornerstone of Melville’s arts and culture calendar. The increase in artists, studios, and sponsors which are engaged with the event is a testament to how much the community values this initiative,” says Ms Atkinson.

“It’s a vibrant weekend that fosters genuine artist-audience connections while strengthening Melville’s identity as a hub for creativity.

“If you’ve ever wondered about the process of making, then this is a perfect opportunity to step behind the scenes.”

With its increased scale and impact, Melville Open Studios 2025 is set to deliver an unmissable weekend of artistic discovery.

Melville Open Studios will run from 10.00am to 4.00pm, Saturday, 3 May and Sunday, 4 May across the City of Melville.
