Lacrosse siblings, a sailor and a BMX racer are among the 11 young athletes awarded a 2024 Youth Sports Scholarship by the City of Melville, revealed during an award ceremony on Wednesday, 18 September 2024 at the Shirley Strickland Sport and Community Pavilion.
Following global sporting events this year such as the Olympics and Paralympics, the City is proud to assist these young stars who will use the scholarship to continue to chase their sporting dreams.
The long-running scholarships give City of Melville young people aged 12 to 19 assistance to achieve their sporting goals through 12 months free membership to the City’s LeisureFit Centres, where they can access the facilities to help them with their sporting endeavours.
The Scholarship is designed to support athletes who are striving to be elite, particularly during the teenage years when research shows that the largest dropout rates occur.

Comments attributed to City of Melville Mayor Katy Mair: “I’m pleased to congratulate this year’s Youth Sports Scholarship recipients, who will be able to use facilities in the LeisureFit centres such as the gyms, saunas, spas and classes,” said Mayor Mair.
“With the inspiration that has come from watching the recent Olympics and Paralympics, among many other global sporting events, it’s been a great year for young athletes to consider what they want to achieve.
“We have a diverse range of recipients this year, and it’s been fantastic to see the talent, determination and hard work of young athletes in our community.
“These young athletes are following in the footsteps of more than 400 previous recipients of the scholarship since 1999, with some of these competing at various international competitions.
“We can’t wait to see what this next round of young athletes can achieve in their careers and I wish them every success.”
