Discovering the Noongar Six Seasons through art

20 May 2024

The Six Season Art Mural project was a collaboration between First Nations students from Melville Senior High School and local artists.

In a celebration of Aboriginal art and community spirit, the Six Season Art Mural project was unveiled earlier this month at the Kulungah Myah Community Centre (KMCC), at a morning tea attended by students and stakeholders.

Created by First Nations students from Melville Senior High School, with support from Noongar artist Noelene Regan, creative producer Kaitlyn Elsegood, and City of Melville staff, the vibrant artworks reflect each of the six Noongar seasons: Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djiba and Kambarang.

The artwork panels will be used to wrap irrigation boxes across the City, to help deter graffiti, while also being displayed in the AH Bracks Library Windows in the Children’s Creative Lab - acting as both a decorative and educational display.

The City of Melville was represented at the unveiling on Wednesday, 1 May 2024, by Deputy Mayor, Glynis Barber, CEO, Gail Bowman and Director of Community Development, Meriel Pickering, in support of the participating students and collaborators.

“It was wonderful working with young mob to bring the seasons to life through bold coloured paper collage. Their cultural pride in the finished pictures is evident, and it’s exciting to see the artwork displayed out in a public setting” said Noelene Regan, Place Names Melville Project Coordinator, City of Melville, one of the project leads.

“These artworks also represent a significant time investment by members of the KMCC Board, City of Melville and Melville Senior High School staff, who dedicated countless hours to grant writing, networking and general support that helped make this project a reality. Our thanks to all involved!

This project was made possible thanks to funding by Highways and Byways: Healing the Land - Healing Ourselves – Together.
