The City of Melville has taken two progressive steps towards its sustainability goals with a rebrand for the significant Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre and the launch of the Community Climate Action Plan.
The centre’s new name the City of Melville EcoHub was revealed at a dual launch event on Monday, 2 December with community members who frequently use the facility invited to celebrate the centre’s new era.
The City of Melville EcoHub name and branding takes inspiration from its intertwined nature with the local environment and it will continue to be a hub, where the community can connect, learn, share, and take local and meaningful action towards achieving an ecologically sustainable future.
Also launched at the event was the City’s Community Climate Action Plan, which was created with input from the community and highlights how residents, businesses and community groups can take action now to live in a sustainable, resilient and biodiverse community.
The Community Climate Action Plan has been developed to guide the City’s services and programs over the next six years, emphasising emissions reduction and climate resilience.
The actions outlined in the Plan will be pivotal in advancing the City’s shared objective of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The plan works alongside the City’s Corporate Climate Action Plan, which drives the City’s activities to reach carbon neutral by 2030.

“The City of Melville EcoHub branding takes inspiration from the grounds and artwork around the EcoHub and embodies the intertwined nature of the local environment.
“We’re very excited for this next chapter for this significant centre and I’m sure it’ll continue to be a hub where the community can connect, learn, share, and take local and meaningful action towards achieving an ecologically sustainable future.
“The launch of the Community Climate Action Plan is another important step for the City of Melville after our Council city declared a climate emergency in 2021 and set some ambitious targets around sustainability and climate action, specifically with regards to achieving carbon neutrality in 2030 as a business, and achieving net-zero by 2050 as a community.
“We recognise that this is a significant undertaking and will require a collaborative approach between individuals, organizations, community groups and council to effectively implement sustainability measures in order to drive positive change across the City.
“We acknowledge the exceptional work delivered by our community, in both advocacy and action, and thank-you for the role that you have collectively played in the development of our Community Climate Action Plan.
“The Plan highlights where residents, businesses and community groups can take action now to live in a sustainable, resilient and biodiverse community and through this collaborative approach, we aim to cultivate a resilient community capable of meeting our net zero emissions target while confronting the challenges posed by climate change.”
