The City of Melville is proud to announce the 15 young athletes who have received a Youth Sports Scholarship in 2021, helping them to achieve their sporting goals.

A special breakfast was held on Wednesday, 1 September 2021 at LeisureFit Melville where the young athletes received their scholarships, which will give them free access to the City’s LeisureFit Centres for one year.

City of Melville Mayor the Hon. George Gear JP said he was pleased to personally award the scholarships to the successful athletes, who will be able to use facilities in the centres such as the gyms, saunas, spas and classes.

“With the inspiration that has come from watching our Australian athletes compete at the recent Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, it’s been a great year for young athletes to consider what they wanted to achieve,” said Mayor Gear.

“We have a diverse range of recipients this year, from hockey players to artistic swimmers and even a young athlete who competes in ninja competitions.”

Mayor Gear said the scholarships had been awarded more than 400 times since 1999 and the young athletes in 2021 were following in the footsteps of athletes who had competed at the Olympics and other international competitions.

“We’re very proud of previous recipients such as Alessandra Ho and Hannah Burkhill, who competed at the Tokyo Olympics in the artistic swimming category,” said Mayor Gear.

“Another success story of the scholarships is golfer Min Woo Lee, who was a three-time recipient from 2014 to 2016, who won the Scottish Open in July.

“We can’t wait to see what this next round of young athletes achieve in their careers and I wish them every success.”
