The City of Melville proudly presented the 35th Mayoral Cup and Seniors Cup golf tournaments at a better looking than ever Point Walter Golf Course.

The City of Melville proudly presented the 35th Mayoral Cup and Seniors Cup golf tournaments at a better looking than ever Point Walter Golf Course, following upgrades in 2021 which continue its esteemed reputation among WA golfers.

Hosted by Belgravia Leisure, golfers who have been supporting Point Walter Golf Course for up to 50 years competed socially in the annual tournament held at one of the City’s finest sporting venues.

Following tradition, City of Melville Mayor the Hon. George Gear JP presented the Mayoral Cup to the winning team of Trevor Cheeseman, Geoff Gaynor and Steve Halversen on Sunday, 14 November 2021.

The winners of the Seniors Cup held a day later on Monday, 15 November were Geoff Hickling, Gordon Marsh, Bill Millen and John Bailey.

Mayor Gear said Point Walter Golf Course, which is maintained by the City and managed by Belgravia Leisure, had undergone significant changes since last year’s Mayoral Cup to ensure it continued to be one of the best maintained public courses in Western Australia.

“The City, through our Capital Works Program, has invested more than $600,000 for course improvements including completely redeveloping the second green to increase it by 120sqm with the addition of a greenside bunker, redeveloping the first tee and landscape surrounds, which include the addition of a synthetic turf tee strip for the winter months,” said Mayor Gear.

“The City completed additional landscaping behind the clubhouse and widened the service road for easier access for larger vehicles and laid additional paths between the second green and third and between the ninth green and the first tee for better and safer connectivity.

“A new irrigation system was installed through the course, which include hydro zoning principles that allow greater control and more efficient water management.

“The course is made special because of the work of the City’s grounds staff who passionately undertake the day-to-day maintenance of the course, along with Belgravia Leisure’s Course Manager Douglas Baily and his staff, who provide excellent services.”

Mayor Gear said Belgravia Leisure had continued to invest in the golf course during 2021 following the success of the Goanna Mini Golf Course, which opened in 2020.

“The mini golf course has proved popular and Belgravia Leisure’s refurbishment of the pro-shop and kitchen, at a value of just under $400,000 shows their commitment to the facility and allows them to serve a new range of food and drink options in a modern, customer-friendly environment,” said Mayor Gear.
