7 January 2020

The City will host it's annual community breakfast, special citizenship ceremony and announcement of the 2020 Community Citizen of the Year Award recipients.

The City of Melville will be celebrating Australia Day with its annual community breakfast, special citizenship ceremony and announcement of the 2020 Community Citizen of the Year Award recipients.

Held every year at John Creaney Reserve in Bull Creek, more than 600 people are expected to attend the event to celebrate Australia Day, with the Lions Club of Bull Creek kicking off the event with a barbecue breakfast served for a gold-coin donation.

A flag raising ceremony will commence at 9.00am, as well as a Welcome to Country by a local Aboriginal Elder and following that the City will hold its special Australia Day citizenship ceremony and announce the recipients of the 2020 Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

The Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards recognise individuals and groups who have made a notable contribution to their community and/or those who have given outstanding service over a number of years.

City of Melville Mayor the Hon. George Gear JP said the family-friendly event is a wonderful demonstration of the City’s diversity, with citizens of all ages, nationalities and cultures gathering to celebrate the day as one community.

“Australia Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian as well as celebrate our great nation and acknowledge our country’s indigenous history over thousands of years,” Mayor Gear said.

“We always have a fantastic crowd year-on-year and I encourage everyone to come on down to John Creaney Reserve on Sunday, 26 January to celebrate the contribution that every person makes to our contemporary and dynamic nation.”

“It is also an opportunity to welcome our City’s newest citizens as well as congratulate and recognise the recipients of this year’s Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Awards, who have been nominated by their peers, friends, colleagues and family for their outstanding and selfless service to their communities.”

The celebrations will be held on Sunday, 26 January 2020 from 8.30am at John Creaney Reserve, corner Parry Avenue and Benningfield Road, Bull Creek. Plenty of parking can be found around the perimeter of the reserve and locals are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible.
