The City has welcomed Scentre Group’s announcement of their 50% interest acquisition in Garden City shopping centre.

The City of Melville has welcomed Scentre Group’s announcement last Friday of their 50% interest acquisition in Garden City shopping centre, which they quickly rebranded Westfield Booragoon effective 6 December 2019.

City of Melville Mayor the Hon. George Gear JP confirmed that Scentre Group had already expressed their commitment to the City to undertake a high quality redevelopment and transform the current centre into a new look Westfield Booragoon.

“From the City’s perspective we look forward to this exciting new redevelopment and we remain focused on ensuring that the future centre and surrounds will become the vibrant heart and centre of our community and City,” said Mayor Gear.

“As part of a future Melville City Centre, the City has a vision of a Library and Cultural Centre which responds to our community’s direction outlined in the Strategic Community Plan: People, Places, and Participation 2016-2020.

“The Library and Cultural Centre is also a key catalyst in the City’s Culture Plan – Creative Melville 2018-2022 which was informed by our major consultation in the form of the 2017 MERGE Festival which over 16,000 people experienced, and through which our residents generated over 2100 ideas about what they would like to see in the future Melville City Centre.

“Our future City Centre will support our cultural vitality and give our community a strong central identity - a sense of place and belonging. The Melville City Centre will become a place for people to gather and connect, a place to experience culture, arts, music and learning, and a place to enjoy friends, events, entertainment and excellent dining. We will continue to work towards achieving these outcomes for our community.”

The City is aware there has been a high level of public interest in the development of a future Melville City Centre and Library and Cultural Centre, which had significant connections to the previous Garden City redevelopment project.

The City of Melville and Scentre Group will be meeting in the near future, and will provide updates to the community where appropriate. For now, the City of Melville Civic Square Library continues to operate as usual.
