FREE online resource to help local businesses

13 August 2019

The City of Melville have created a new online resource, Your Guide to a Safer and more Secure Business.

The City of Melville have created a new online resource, Your Guide to a Safer and more Secure Business to connect local businesses with information, resources and contact numbers to help keep their business safe and secure.

A  Business Community Reference Group (BCRG) made up of nine representatives from the local business community were instrumental in the Business Crime and Safety Project. The BCRG informed questions for the 2018 Business Crime and Safety Survey, which along with crime statistics, informed the topics for the newly developed resource.  This online resource aims to create a safer and more secure City by reducing business crime, which is one of the City’s key priorities in the 2017 – 2021 Safer Melville Plan.

City of Melville Mayor, Russel Aubrey says local businesses are an important part of the community and the guide is designed to help them keep their business safe and secure and provide them with information  on what to do if ever faced with an issue or criminal activity.

“Reducing business crime is a key priority and we are working hard to better connect with and support our local businesses,” said Mayor Aubrey.

“This resource is free and easy to use and includes important business safety information, crime prevention tips and helpful resources.  .

“Click to call phone numbers, useful links, video play buttons and downloadable fact sheets are throughout the resource to support time-poor business owners navigate the resource  on an electronic device such as a mobile phone or tablet.

“It’s quick and easy for business owners to access information and we are keeping it green by not printing paper copies.”

The topics listed in the guide include:

  • Your physical premises
  • You and your staff’s safety
  • Your customers/patrons
  • People surrounding your business
  • How the Community Safety Service (CSS) improves safety at your business
  • How to improve the area your business is in.

Reducing business crime was identified as a key priority for the City of Melville after the results of the 2016 Business Perception Survey showed that local businesses were less satisfied than residents with safety and security.  It is encouraging to see that the results of the 2018 Business Perception Survey showed the City of Melville set the industry high for business satisfaction with safety and security.  Your Guide to a Safer and more Secure business, will continue to improve on this in the future.
