Active in the Park Returns for Spring

1 October 2018

As the weather warms up the City’s Active in the Park program will return to help residents get fit and healthy during the spring and summer months.

Active in the Park consists of four free exercise classes a week at picturesque locations across Melville. Classes include the low-impact Active Light, the more vigorous Functional Fitness, Yoga at breathtaking Point Walter and the popular Tunes for Tots class for children aged 2 to 4.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said Active in the Park numbers had continued to grow year-on-year as more people realised the importance of physical activity and keeping fit and healthy.

“Exercising and keeping physically healthy is extremely important but we know it can be a bit intimidating for someone just starting out or returning to exercising,” Mayor Aubrey said.

“We believe Active in the Park helps break down the barriers to participation and the program’s continued growth year-on-year indicates this. The program is free, suits all ages and abilities and our instructors are extremely friendly and helpful.

“More so we think Active in the Park has been successful because it’s not intimidating. You’re not in a gym surrounded by pieces of equipment you don’t recognise or know how to use, rather you’re out in the fresh air and most of the class consists of bodyweight exercises or exercises using only very simple equipment.

“Active in the Park is perfect for friends and families, as everyone can exercise together and there’s a class to suit everybody. We look forward to our upcoming season and hope to see not only our regulars return, but many new faces as well as we all embrace a healthy lifestyle.”

Active in the Park launched in 2015 to help the City achieve its aspiration to support the community to lead healthy and active lifestyles. All sessions are facilitated by qualified trainers and instructors from the City’s LeisureFit Centres, with the exception of Tunes for Tots.

Participants are required to register for each session and a registration form and more information can be found on the City’s website at

Active in the Park wouldn’t be possible without the support of platinum sponsors Live Lighter and LeisureFit, and gold sponsors Garden City Shopping Centre and Pharmacy 777.
