Melville Celebrates Australia Day

18 January 2018

Australia Day will begin again this year with the City of Melville’s early morning annual Australia Day celebration and community breakfast.

The popular annual Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony, held at John Creaney Reserve in Bull Creek, sees large crowds of 600 - 700 people who come together to enjoy a barbeque breakfast by the Lions Club of Bull Creek and to celebrate the Australia Day Award recipients for the year.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the family-friendly event was a wonderful demonstration of the City’s diversity, with citizens of all ages, nationalities and cultures gathering to celebrate our great country as one community.

“On this important day we welcome our newest citizens and we importantly present the Australia Day Awards, in recognition of persons and groups who have either made a noteworthy contribution during 2018 or given outstanding service to the local community for a number of years,” Mayor Aubrey said.

The Australia Day Awards categories include;

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Group of the Year

The winners of the awards will each receive $400 to donate to their community group or chosen charity, while the nominators each receive a $100 for the same purpose.

This year’s award recipients were nominated because they had significantly contributed to the local community during 2017, or have carried out extraordinary service to the local community over a number of years. Award recipients were nominated by peers, friends, colleagues and family.

The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Friday, 26 January 2018 from 8.30am at John Creaney Reserve, corner Parry Avenue and Benningfield Road, Bull Creek. The Lions Club Bull Creek breakfast is available for a gold coin donation.

Throughout the year, Citizenship ceremonies are held at the City of Melville Civic Centre. Officiated by His Worship the Mayor, the certificates are presented to the new Australian citizens and become legal proof of Australian citizenship. Please visit our Citizenship page for more information.
