Directions from Young People - Youth Strategy

Active

Help shape the future for young people in our City.

Last Updated: 27 August 2025 Follow Engagement

The current Directions from Young People (DFYP) 2022–2025 Strategy is coming to an end, and now is the time to help shape the next version, which will guide how we support and engage young people across the City.

A Youth Strategy is a formal plan that sets out how local government works with and for young people. It reflects the priorities of young people aged 12 to 25, and the people and organisations that support them, like families, schools, service providers, and community groups. It’s an important document used across the organisation, for everything from community development and events to urban planning and infrastructure.

The Strategy will help the City understand what matters most to young people, ensure their voices are reflected in planning, programs and policies, guide investment in services, events, spaces and opportunities, support collaboration with community organisations and youth advocates, and provide a framework to track progress and measure outcomes for youth wellbeing.

The City’s current Youth Strategy was developed in 2021, guided by the voices of over 563 young people, and formally noted by Council in early 2022. It’s helped guide action across four key focus areas:

  • Youth Focus – making space for youth voices
  • Wellbeing – supporting mental and physical health
  • Communication – connecting through youth-friendly channels
  • Making a Difference – creating opportunities to lead and contribute.

The current Strategy ends in 2025, and the next version will take us forward from 2026 and beyond.

This is your chance to help set the direction for how the City continues to support young people, through services, spaces, programs, and policies.

Youth Steering Group

Our Youth Steering Group has played a central role in the development of this project. Working in collaboration with the City, the group has contributed to the design of the engagement approach, supported the delivery of consultation activities, and will assist in reviewing feedback to help identify key actions for the updated Strategy. The group is also actively supporting broader community engagement and will support the development of the final Strategy to ensure it reflects the voices and priorities of young people.

What's happening now

Over 550 people shared their ideas and feedback. We’ve brought it all together in an Engagement Report that highlights what we heard and how it’s helping shape the project. Short on time? Take a look at our Engagement Snapshot for a quick overview of participation and key themes.

We’re now working to refresh and refine the Plan, which is anticipated to be completed by the middle of 2026.

What is a Youth Strategy and why does it matter?

A Youth Strategy is a plan developed by the City to guide how we support young people through services, programs, infrastructure and decision-making. It ensures young people’s voices are heard and reflected in the City's future planning.

Who can have their say?

We want to hear from young people aged 12 to 25, parents and caregivers, schools, service providers, and anyone in the community who cares about supporting young people.

How will my feedback be used?

Feedback collected during the consultation will be reviewed and used to shape the development of the new Youth Strategy. The City will prepare a draft Strategy that reflects what we heard from the community, which will be shared for final feedback before being presented to Council for endorsement. A summary of community input will also be made available.

My privacy is important – will my information be shared?
All of the information we collect will be kept private. Your name and personal information will not be published; however, if we become concerned about your safety because of something you say, we may need to talk to people who can help you. You do not have to take part in the survey if you don’t want to and you can change your mind at any point.
What age group is considered 'young people'?
For the purposes of this strategy, young people are typically defined as those aged 12 to 25 years.
I’m younger or older than 12 to 25 years — can I still participate?

Absolutely. We still want to hear from you!

Whilst our main focus is on people aged 12 to 25 and those who provide services or support to young people, anyone in the community who cares about supporting young people is welcome to get involved and have their say.

About the Youth Steering Group
The Youth Steering Group is a team of young people who meet monthly to help shape youth projects, events, and activities in the City of Melville. They work with the City to make Melville a better place for young people and help deliver the Directions from Young People Strategy.
