The Bigger is Better Trial

50% larger bin to help you recycle more. Have your say.

The City of Melville is conducting a WA-first trial, using recycling bins 50 per cent larger than the current ones, to help increase the amount of material recycled and decrease the amount placed in the green top bins.

The Trial will take place over 16 weeks beginning in December 2010, until the end of March 2011.

630 household in Winthrop will be given a larger bin in place of the regular recycling bin to trial for this period. Larger bins will also be placed in City of Melville parks, reserves and amenities for public use.

Residents on the trial, as well as members of the community, are encouraged to send in their thoughts and feedback about the new bigger bins.

Information obtained through this Trial will provide the basis for discussion on the usefulness of larger bins in helping increase the City's recycling and reduce landfill waste.

Progress Update

Update as at 4 May 2012 the implantation of 360 Liter Bin Trial has been delayed as the city is currently looking into the option of weekly recycling. A report has been drafted comparing the two and will be submitted shortly.

Since the Trial began in December 2010, weights of bins collected show an increase in recycling, a decrease in green bin waste and less contamination where waste is being put in the wrong bin-type.

Before the Trial, general waste averaged 5.52 tonnes per load and recycling 3.64 tonnes per load.

During the trial, the average general waste has fallen to 4.74 tonnes per load and recycling has grown to 4.4 tonnes per load.

Congratulations and thank you to all those taking part.
