Footpaths and street trees
Most homes and gardens are well established of around 20 years of age and so understandably residents would resist having "their" garden verges dug up for footpaths and/or new trees. Some properties now have mature bushes and non trafficable flower beds in the verge making it necessary to walk (or run)on the road and dodge parked cars. "Brick chip* verges" are becoming more common.
Our locality has lots more people trying to keep fit and building community spirit by walking more frequently. What's happened to the almost universal planting of street trees for shading and good footpaths as a suburban right for everyone, every where? Our area needs long term solutions that consider traffic, resident verge parking and footpath location balanced against resident desires and local council apathy & budgeting constraints.
With several properties becoming suitable to sub divide and redevelop there will be more traffic, more driveways and less room for street trees. However with this development happening and similarly underground power installation now is a good time for improving our suburb.
*Water saving and low maintenance "Brick chips" that are of large diameter (more like small rocks rather than properly bedded gravel) are impossible for wheeled prams, bikes or wheelchairs to traverse and have potential to twist ankles of the pedestrian users or joggers using the verges in preference to risking the road and its increasing traffic.
