Street Tree (Council Verge Tree)
The City of Melville is responsible for planting, pruning, replacing and maintaining Council Verge Trees on road reserve/Council verges, which adjoin properties. Items placed in trees, attached to trees are not permitted (play equipment). We also inspect damaged/diseased or unhealthy and pest affected Council owned trees.
Street Tree Planting
The City plants a limited number of new street trees, only in Winter months (July to October). This number is approved by current years budget, in accordance with the Streetscape Strategy. This allows uniformity and maintains streetscape aesethics. They are planted within the City's capacity and with current resources. Residents can no longer choose the type of tree to be planted, our team will select the best tree type, to enhance the streetscape of the whole area.
Once the allocated number of trees have been requested (list is full), no further requests are to be taken for that year. All these requests are transfered to future planting schedules.
The City of Melville's street trees are one of our most important assets. These trees are crucial to maintaining the high quality of our public realm and provide numerous environmental, social and health benefits to the City and community.
The City manages and maintains trees located on the verges, parks, reserves and road medians.
Customers are not permitted to purchase and plant a tree of their own choice on the verge under any circumstances.
Council is responsible for:-
- Street Tree and those in Parks/Reserves - pruning;
-
Shaping; and
-
Removal of verge trees.
Residents are responsible for;
- Providing water for the tree, especially in summer month;
- Keep the grass away from developing trees; and
- Avoid damaging the tree.
RESIDENTS CAN NO LONGER REQUEST THE TYPE OF TREE TO BE PLANTED.
On line requests are no longer accepted. This is to aid in management of the City's Street Tree Stratergy, planning, purchasing and budgeting requirements. QLD Box, Box Trees in general, Ficus, Erythrina, Robinia, Pepper Trees, Cape Lylic and Grevilles Robusta varieties will no longer be planted, because of leaf litter, nut drop, excessive pruning required from powerlines. These factors result in a large number of complaints from residents, requests for removal, alleged poisoning ectera.
