Energy Efficiency in New Houses and Additions

An energy efficient home is one which incorporates common sense design principles that makes the building efficient in terms of, reducing the need for expensive heating and cooling appliances/equipment, reducing appliance running costs and therefore energy bills and reducing energy related greenhouse gas emissions without compromising on comfort. In fact, an energy efficient home is generally more comfortable, easier to maintain and costs no more to build than a conventional home.

New dwellings and additions effective from 1 July 2003 are required to comply with the Energy Efficiency provisions in the Building Code of Australia (BCA). These mandatory energy efficiency requirements will result in changes in the way in which houses are designed and constructed and have application to buildings which are artificially heated and cooled to ensure that the buildings and services are energy efficient.
