The Wireless Hill Vision 2020 is a guide for the future direction and development of Wireless Hill, providing key themes (heritage, access, environment, community facilities, long term viability) and objectives for the site. The Vision for Wireless Hill is to celebrate the history and natural heritage of Wireless Hill as a regional destination for learning and recreation built upon the equal value and uniqueness of:
-
Its Aboriginal heritage and connection to the land
-
Its European heritage as a wireless communication site of world significance
-
Its bio-diversity and ecology.
The primary objectives of the Vision are to:
- Preserve, enhance and promote heritage
- Preserve, enhance and educate about the environment
- Promote local and regional significance of the reserve
- Provide a local and regional community destination
- Integration to adjacent facilities/services
An Interpretation Plan for the site was recently completed by consultants, and involved over 6 months of consultative work with both City of Melville staff and key stakeholders, who came together to form a steering group to guide the project. It was identified that the site offered a wide range of experiences to the visitor, from both cultural and natural heritage perspectives. Some key themes identified during the process included; the natural environment which provides the foundation upon which all stories of all man’s occupation and use stem from; Aboriginal people having a long & continuous association with the place, and the former station’s history which provided a crucial link between Australia and the rest of the world. The themes incorporate the interpretative concepts of:
- Remoteness & connectivity
- Intersection of communication & the environment
- Real & virtual space.
The Interpretation Plan is now a vital component of the long term Wireless Hill Vision 2020 Project. The plan also outlines recommendations for building use and ongoing conservation & interpretation of the heritage listed structures, including the current museum & it's collection.
The Wireless Hill Project Management team are now working on a Concept Plan for the entire site, incorporating a more holistic methodology for future works, which will celebrate the rich history and natural heritage of Wireless Hill as a regional destination for learning and recreation.
