When is this happening?
Riverside is a long term project that is likely to span the next several years. During 2005 and 2006 extensive consultation occurred with community members regarding ideas for the design of a new library and community facility in the vicinity of the existing Canning Bridge library.
This consultation phase included the following:
- Focus groups conducted at the Canning Bridge Library providing the opportunity for library users to give their input to this project;
- Local seniors groups were consulted and invited to present their requirements and ideas for the development of a new community facility and library. The City of Melville has a significant ageing population and we want to ensure that we address the concerns and requirements of all residents;
- The Tivoli group were invited to provide their comments on the proposed development;
- Young people were included in the participation with input from local schools and young peoples groups and
- An open community workshop was held in early 2006 that provided an opportunity for residents, businesses and interested community members to provide their ideas and thoughts for this exciting project.
What happens next?
All contributions received during the consultation phase will be considered and reviewed. We want a future community and cultural hub to be relevant to our community.
During 2007/20008 an extensive precinct planning study will commence for the Canning Bridge Precinct. This study will provide valuable information to the Council and develop a clear and comprehensive, sustainable vision for future land use, landscape and built form character of Canning Bridge. Other considerations included in the study will be transport and traffic management, exploration of Transit Orientated Development opportunities, pedestrian accessibility to the new rail station and around the precinct, foreshore improvements and opportunities and community facility development.
It is anticipated the Canning Bridge Precinct study will take a year to finalise. The study will provide the framework for new developments such as the library and community facility. Once the Precinct study has been completed it will allow the Riverside project to move to the design phase of the project.
