What Is A Neighbourhood Plan?
Neighbourhood planning aims to develop partnerships between communities and government, built on co-operation and recognition of the creative ideas and skills that neighbourhoods have to offer.
People identify with their own neighbourhoods and localities – the places where they live, receive services, and make social connections. These may be geographic neighbourhoods, ‘neighbourhoods of interest’ or neighbourhoods of identity. Neighbourhood planning aims to develop partnerships between communities and government, built on co-operation and recognition of the creative ideas and skills that neighbourhoods have to offer.
Neighbourhood planning involves the recording of local community planning processes, and a Neighbourhood Plan is a living document that is subject to change. It documents characteristics of the local community and its people as well as the social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects within the neighbourhood.
A neighbourhood plan examines opportunities and challenges and proposes activities or projects to address these. Suggestions and ideas may involve service delivery, capital works and community activities within that neighbourhood. The neighbourhood plan guides the development of partnerships between the local community, community organisations, City of Melville, other government agencies and local businesses.
