Sustainable Community Services Workshop with Jim Diers
This workshop is the first step in a dialogue the Mayor hopes to see continue between community organisations and volunteer groups in Melville.
On Monday, 4 April, around 30 community representatives came together for a workshop presented by international speaker Jim Diers at the City of Melville.
Groups included a great range of community service organisations and volunteer groups including, scouts, resident interest groups, Disability Services Commission, Health Deptartment, Fremantle Multicultural Centre, churches, schools, service clubs and men's shed members.
Participants were inspired by Jim Diers from City of Seattle who talked about community neighbourhood power and shared success stories of 'bottom-up' projects, how to make communities sustainable and connected, how to inspire and motivate workers and volunteers who contribute to the civic cultural and community life of Melville with a view to seeing where resources and ideas can be shared.
Participants also heard about the power of stories – of sharing resources – of tapping into people’s passions.
Some of the feedback from participants included:
"We need to work from the ground up and not from the top down"
"Grassroots development works"
“More 'can do' messages"
