Next Steps

Where to from here?

You have told us of your concerns about safety, population growth and traffic congestion; that open space and the river are valued by everyone and that Garden City Shopping Centre is used by all sectors of the community.

From a strategic perspective, you have informed us that the City of Melville needs a clearer vision for its future and the Elected Members and Council staff need to be more ’in touch’ with what the community wants. The opinions provided through this dynamic Melville Visions process will be analysed and form the foundation of new directions for City growth.

The review of Town Planning Scheme No.5 (currently underway) and the development of a new Local Planning Strategy will establish a clear legislative direction for growth and development from an urban planning perspective.

The new ‘Long Term Community Plan’ will encapsulate the broad social, physical, economic and cultural environment that is the City of Melville from a community and corporate perspective.

What is a Long Term Community Plan?

A new direction is the preparation of a Long Term Community Plan for the City of Melville that will address many of the issues raised in this dialogue project.

The Long Term Community Plan will focus on a 10 year period and provide a basis for accountability for the City of Melville. The Plan is currently being developed and will be informed by existing activities and operations of the City of Melville, and community input from a range of consultations, including the annual resident surveys and the Melville Visions project.

The Long Term Community Plan will:

  • establish a clear ‘vision’ for the future of the City in line with community expectations

  • provide for community involvement in decision-making and project delivery

  • identify key themes and action areas across the City

  • guide corporate planning and service delivery

Continuous Consultation

There will be continuous opportunities for the community to be involved in creating the sort of City we all want through inputting to the Long Term Community Plan, review of the Town Planning Scheme and more importantly, to implementation at the local level.

New partnerships will be forged with individuals, community groups and industry and collectively Melville will be an even better place to live for present and future generations.
