Feedback on tonights Community event at 'Tompkins on Swan'

Posted by Dr Fran Pesich at 28 August 2008, 11:10 AM
1. I had no idea where the venue was. I'd found out about the event at the DPI session on the Canning Bridge area recently held at the South of Perth yacht club. I would welcome someone sending out the 'pack' to 3 Dale Place Booragoon. I would recommend that in future 'Tompkins on Swan' needs a street address (try and find it on Google). You may have then attracted a more diverse demographic.
2. If you have a proforma for providing comments (e.g. a form with suitable headers as prompts) it would be most welcome.
3. The facilitator at table 4 was awful. Couldn't control the group, couldn't be heard, had difficulty with english - but worst of all - couldn't interpret correctly the comments provided. Very narrow minded perhaps? He was trying hard, but definitely not suitably skilled for the job.
4. The 'notes taker' was extremely selective, and didn't bother to take notes from comments made by half the people at the table. Many of the neglected notes would have been on the 'town planning level' with the 20 year time horizon in mind. In other words, some of the few comments made which were along the lines of what was sought after by the organisers.
5. The "light supper" consisted of grated cheese in white bread, highly calorific biscuits and (thank goodness) some fruit. Didn't even want to try the beverages. Is this a good picture that the council wants to paint for it's rate payers (who're still complaining about their rates hikes)?
6. The draft 'town plan' is awful. 'Blade Runner' was the comment from the only person under 35 at the table, and I can only agree. I will try very hard to put in some written comments, but had hoped this event might have made it unecessary.
7. I am glad that the Draft Town Plan is brought to the community by the council, rather than 'posted' somewhere for us to visit and stare at uncomprehendingly. It certainly motivates me to provide input - both as a resident and owner of offices in the area.

Neighbourhood Workshops

Dr Pesich, thank you for your comments regarding the Neighbourhood Workshop at Tompkins on Swan Function Centre on 27 August. We appreciate people taking the time to provide information that allows us to improve on the planning and delivery of each event.

We will certainly be providing a pro-forma for written submissions both at future events and on the website as this was a suggestion by a number of participants.

Immediately after the event, we met with all table facilitators and will modify future workshops based on facilitator and participant feedback.

The aim of the workshop was to provide a forum to inform the community about the Local Planning Strategy and provide an opportunity for people to speak to Council Officers. Participants would then, if they choose, be able to provide a more detailed written submission based on a greater depth of knowledge about the Local Planning Strategy.

We are keen to hear from as many community members as possible and, as you have said, bringing the Local Planning Strategy to the community is one way of achieving this.

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Garling St

Unfortunately I did not know about the community workshops and thus missed them. The issue I would like to raise is the traffic on Garling St. It seems to be a major route (and short cut) for cars and especially trucks and semi's going to O'Connor industrial area (City of Fremantle). With increased commercial buildings and factories in O'Connor area the traffic has increased considerably. There is disregard for the speed limit from all vehicles plus noise pollution from screeching brakes. Traffic is at its worst from Monday to Friday starting as early as 6 am going all day till the evening. Its continues on the weekends with Visy and the Brownes (milk) trucks (main offenders) driving up and down on a Sat and Sunday, sometimes upto 10pm at night.

What are plans for Garling St to reduce the traffic and return it to a "residential street". More and more houses are being built on Garling street and some action needs to be taken. Is consultation with City of Fremantle planned?

thanks
