Canning Bridge Precinct - Place Making
The Canning Bridge Precinct is evolving to become a unique, vibrant, creative community space. As one of the City of Melville’s major strategic urban development priorities, investigations are underway for the long-term planning for this precinct. However, there is also a need for some short-term ‘place making’ activities beyond the built form.
Place making is an approach which focuses on what is unique and interesting about a place, and looks to make it a more pleasurable and enriching place to work, walk, shop and gather. There is growing evidence that shows vibrant, people-oriented places have real and measurable social and economic benefits.
To create and kick-start a process where residents and businesses have an opportunity to play an active role in re-creating the Canning Bridge Precinct into a rich place for locals and visitors to enjoy, the City has engaged master place maker David Engwicht. David is an internationally recognised place making and traffic specialist and is considered one of the world’s most innovative thinkers and practitioners when it comes to creating vibrant public space.
An intensive three day program is scheduled from 16 - 24 March, which will involve a number of stakeholders across the community, including businesses and representatives from the City, participating in a variety of forums. The program culminates with a celebration event on the evening of Wednesday, 24 March 2010.

Canning Bridge Precinct - Place Making
A group of staff from the City of Melville met with a small group of residents who had indicated they would like to stay involved to progress ideas raised during the three days. Due to other committments they were unable to remain involved.
What we would like to do is come together again with interetsed residents and businesses to work on a community art project together to celebrate Canning Bridge. If you would like to be involved please contact Teresa Campbell, Acting Coordinator for Neighbourhood Development on 9364 0147 or email teresa.campbell@melville.wa.gov.au
